About Gordon S. Johnson, Jr. of the Brain Injury Law Group

By Gordon S. Johnson, Jr.

I have been writing about brain injury on the internet for many years and have been working on brain injury cases since the early 90s. I founded the Brain Injury Law Group in ‘96. Since them, I have focused my practice only on brain injury cases. From day one, I recognized that the legal and medical communities didn’t totally understand the range of problems a person with brain injury faces. The first case was the husband of a woman who worked in my office. When trying to understand, I learned a lot about brain injury from listening to his wife. Hearing her talk about what they were going through each day was much more informative than any medical records. Past and present, the doctors didn’t totally get it. The medical professionals thought he had made a full recovery from his brain injury caused by a blast.

My client’s wife did not think he was fully recovered, and I trusted her. As I sought answers for them, I attended a seminar on brain injury. Some of the brightest minds in the field sparked a desire to keep searching for answers. While I did just that, I found my passion for brain injury cases. That has been the focus of my practice ever since then. I opened the Brain Injury Law Group. I also launched my first webpage, http://tbilaw.com, in November 1996. Then I started the advocacy page http://waiting.com shortly after. These two websites changed the way people perceived brain injury info. It also gave me the opportunity to do my passion, brain injury cases.

In the past, I have pursued cases that have generated more than $160 million in recoveries for my clients. The cases have stretched across the U.S. and have involved many other talented trial lawyers. My successes in these cases was the tied we have to brain injury and the connections we’ve made from spending a generation in this field.

Another key element to my success is my paralegal Jayne Zabrowski. Calling my office, you’ll know right away that Jayne’s the best at what she does. We pride ourselves on the fact that we get it. We understand that it’s more than just an IQ test. Brain injury impacts four areas: cognition, behavior, mood, and physical functioning. Even if there’s an improvement in cognition, the other three areas might still see problems.

We get it in terms of both disability and recovery from brain injury. My personal story helps with this. I suffered from moderate brain damage, leaving me with objective evidence on my own MRI. After my injury, I went to law school and practiced law since 1979. The journey to recovery can be shaky, but the challenges of law school had much to do with my recovery. I know I am better than I used to be, and I hope to keep improving. But I also learned I need to make accommodations for things that my brain doesn’t do as well as before the brain injury.

If we take your case, we not only would help your legal case, but also would help with your recovery. We are qualified to help both of these goals.

I graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1975, and from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1979 with honors. My brain injury happened in 1975, two months before graduating from Medill. Before starting the Brain Injury Law Group, I was a general practice attorney in Berlin, WI, with the firm Gonyo and Johnson.

I have a license to practice law in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Illinois. I have managed cases pro hac vice in 15 other states.

I have been chair of the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group and the brain injury group of the American Association of Justice, the national trial lawyers group. I also was chosen by Gov. Scott McCallum in 2002 to the WI TBI Task Force. I served on the board of the Brain Injury Association of Wisconsin. I also was the BIAW newsletter’s editor.

I frequently speak and write about brain injury. I am available to speak to your organization on brain injury, almost anywhere in the United States.
